FEATURED WORK
Their world is about to ask them both where they belong.
An upcoming novel by Kelvin Rodeo
More than a decade ago, I started writing my second novel when I had hit a seemingly impassable writer's block in my first novel.
It was a science fiction story about Saipan in an alternate timeline. About young people falling in love and discovering that the world they inherited does not have to be the world they leave behind. About corruption, belonging, citizenship, political silence, and what happens when ordinary people finally decide that enough is enough.
Then I lost it.
For over ten years, the unfinished manuscript sat trapped on a broken external hard drive alongside years of old writing, music, artwork, and pieces of a younger version of myself that I thought were gone forever.
Then the files were miraculously recovered one day.
And suddenly, Children of the Crash was alive again.
Now I'm going back to finish the story I started all those years ago.

Eighteen years after an alien refugee ship crashed on Saipan,
the Marianas have become the most technologically advanced nation on Earth.
The Loupinians helped build that future. Their children still have no permanent place in it.
Zekar Taimalur has never set foot on his ancestors’ planet.
Amber Castro has never had to question whether Saipan is hers.
As they grow closer, an illness spreads, tensions rise, and
the system their island depends on begins to fail...
When the Loupinian ship fell from the sky, the people of Saipan welcomed its survivors.
Loupinian knowledge helped transform the islands: hospitals advanced, new transit crossed the island,
and the Marianas became a place the rest of the world could no longer overlook.
But the laws governing the people who made that transformation possible did not keep pace.
Loupinian workers remained tied to temporary status.
Their children grew up speaking Chamorro, going to island schools, and calling Saipan home, while being treated as outsiders.
Zekar is one of those children. At eighteen, he faces a choice familiar to many in his community:
leave for a future elsewhere,
or stay and fight for one on the island he loves.
Amber Castro is the president’s daughter.
Zekar is the quiet Loupinian boy at her school whose words reveal
a side of Saipan she has never had to see.
What begins between them in private becomes harder to hide
as an illness reaches the islands and fear spreads alongside it.
The Republic needs Loupinian knowledge more than ever.
Its leaders are still reluctant to recognize the people who hold it.
For Zekar and Amber, love becomes a choice with consequences
for their families, their communities, and the future of the place they both call home.
Children of the Crash: Under the Same Stars blends
science fiction, romance, and a coming-of-age story set in a reimagined Marianas.
Beneath its extraordinary technology is a human question:
What does it take to belong to the place where your life began?
